HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF “CHEMISTRY, ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND RATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL USE”

The history of the Department of Chemistry, Environmental Protection and Rational Environmental Management of the Odessa State Academy of Cold was closely linked to the history of the formation and development of this educational institution. And this is not surprising, because our educational institution began its existence as a scientific-educational institution of the chemical profile – the General and Applied Chemistry Technicum (1922), then – the Odessa Chemical Institute. The first problems that then demanded their solution were problems related to the food industry, winemaking, refrigeration engineering, and the technology of production of substances and materials that are extremely necessary for the national economy of the country – fertilizers, artificial rubber. The problem was the preservation of agricultural raw materials and food products (first of all – with artificial cold).

It is understandable that the development of these areas of technology and industry, the construction of new enterprises, and objects of the agro-industrial complex required the dissemination of scientific research and scientific and technological developments in the field of general, physical, colloidal chemistry and chemical technology. Later on, issues related to the study of the physicochemical characteristics of substances and materials, the study of the properties of substances and the study of processes at low and cryogenic temperatures, the separation of air, the production of products of this division – nitrogen, oxygen, argon, neon, etc. played an important role. also works in the field of physicochemical properties of liquid crystals, environmentally hazardous substances and materials, adsorption processes, etc.

In 1980 – 1993 The department carried out scientific research and scientific and technical developments on the tasks of large enterprises and departments of Ukraine and the USSR (Odesa Portside Plant, Odessa Ship Repair Plant, State Institute of Nitrogen Industry (Moscow), Vilnius Chemical Plant (Vilnius, Lithuania), Energy »S.P. Korolev (Kaliningrad, Moscow region), the State Institute of the chlorine industry (Moscow), the State Institute of Applied Chemistry (Leningrad), the Ministry of Mineral Fertilizers (Moscow), the Union of Azov from “(Moscow),” SoyuzHlor “(Moscow) and others.

Naturally, the scientific and educational activities of our department were closely connected with the scientific, educational and scientific and technical activities of other departments of the Academy, in particular: physics, mathematics, refrigeration machines, cryogenic engineering, engineering thermophysics.

Since the 1980s, the focus of the department’s efforts has been on ecology, ecological safety and environmental issues. Thanks to these efforts the Department of Chemistry, Environmental Protection and Rational Environmental Management became the first in Odessa and one of the first in Ukraine, where the training of environmental engineers began. At that time, the Department of General Chemistry was transformed into the Department of Chemistry, Environmental Protection and Rational Environmental Management (1984).

During the years of existence of this department, 20 graduates and students of the department became candidates of sciences, some of them now – Doctors of sciences, associate professors, professors, well-known teachers and scientists. They work in Ukraine, Russia, the USA, Germany, Italy, Mauritius, Australia, New Zealand, Mongolia, Israel, Mali, Syria, Vietnam and other countries of the world.

The department has organized and conducted several major international conferences in the field of ecology and ecological safety, physical chemistry, in which world-famous scientists, scientific institutions, enterprises and firms from the USA, Japan, France, Germany took part. The Department of Chemistry, Environmental Protection and Rational Environmental Management took an active part in public environmental activities. The staff of the department – teachers, scientists, post-graduate students conduct educational and professional-oriented work with schoolchildren, student youth, population, organize and conduct ecological expeditions, field practices, seminars, conferences, festivals. On the basis of the chair, two public environmental organizations are organized – the Youth Ecological Center named after them. academician VI Vernadsky and the Association “Environmental safety and counteraction to emergency situations” named after Academician MI Andrusova publishes the magazine “Emergencies and Public Protection” (since 1997). The department prepared and printed biographical essays and monographs devoted to the outstanding figures of science, technology, culture – V.S. Martynovsky, M.I. Andrusov, V.A. Khavkin, L.I. Mandelstam, A.N. Lyapunov, O.3. Nudelmanu, I.P. Bull, Ya. Taubina, Ulugbek, I.I. Puzanov et al.
